Days of Summer PastPosted by Russ Devan (New Hanover, United States) on 12 February 2008 in People & Portrait and Portfolio. Shot at Cape Hatteras National Seashore, North Carolina Today has been the first real taste of winter we've had since...well, last winter. New Hanover woke up on Monday morning to temperatures in the single digits that followed on the heels of fierce winds the day before (30 mph sustained with up to 50 mph gusts). The wind was so bad that it picked up and dislodged a portion of our swimming pool cover (that's only happened once before in 8 years). On Saturday night before that, we experienced bone-jarring thunder (yes, thunder...in February) loud enough that many of us thought that something either exploded in the neighborhood or crashed nearby. Car alarms were set off. Even Nala, our very gutsy, 5-month old Labrador Retriever, was barking at the thunder (our previous Lab, our old pal Shadow...God rest his soul...would have been cowering at our feet from the loud explosion). Today, New Hanover is forecast to get a bit of snow before changing to freezing rain in the evening. All of this weird weather made me think how nice it would be if summer were here. If we can't have real winter with real snow storms, then I'd rather just have summer (at least from a photographic standpoint). So, here's an image to remind everyone (in the northern hemisphere) we only have a month and a half to go until more civilized weather arrives (damn ground hog!). "The Master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both."
