Crescent Moon Over Lake Ontelaunee

Posted by Russ Devan (New Hanover, United States) on 10 March 2008 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

I decided to make the most of the first day of daylight savings time and head out for a late afternoon/early evening walk at Lake Ontelaunee near Reading (like many of my walks, if I take my camera, I don't do as much walking as I should). Upon my arrival, I was greeted by about a thousand snow geese hanging out in the middle of the lake. At first, I thought they were gulls, but I could hear their honking as soon as I left the car. After a day of rain and storms on Saturday, Sunday was full of brilliant sunshine, albeit, with a strong, biting wind. As the sun was setting, I found a trail leading through the woods to the edge of a small cove. As I turned a corner just before reaching the water, I surprised a pair of mallards and a great blue heron who immediately took wing as soon as I appeared. Had I known they would be there, I would have been more stealthy and tried to capture them with the camera. They would have made a nice addition to this image. Unfortunately, I had to settle for shooting this without them. Although, the setting crescent moon over the lake was a nice consolation.

Thanks for stopping by.
