Snow Geese, Lake Ontelaunee

Posted by Russ Devan (New Hanover, United States) on 12 March 2008 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio.

There were a large gaggle of snow geese that made a stopover on Lake Ontelaunee near Reading on Sunday. These guys were as beautiful as they were noisy! Every so often, the entire flock would decide to take off simultaneously and go for a little jaunt around the lake. They looked like a swarm of locust all moving together at once. They almost completely filled the air space immediately above the lake when they flew. They would lift off from the water, circle around the lake, then land in the same spot from where they started. All for no apparent reason. The first two times they did this, I was caught in the middle of a lens change and missed them taking off. This was their third time in the air on Sunday evening.

Thanks for stopping by.
