Sit Down, Rest a While, and Take In the ViewPosted by Russ Devan (New Hanover, United States) on 1 April 2008 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio. This is a cottage along the shores of Blue Mountain Lake in small hamlet of Blue Mountain Lake, New York. The row of Adirondack chairs offered an inviting view of the picturesque lake. When I stopped to photograph this lake and these chairs, I happened upon a few interesting folks with whom I struck up some conversations. One was a fellow photographer who had traveled all the way from Washington State for a few weeks to photograph the Adirondacks that autumn. The other person was a bicyclist whom I had passed a few miles back that was bicycle camping through the southern and central Adirondacks...solo. He had all of his camping equipment...tent, sleeping bag, cook stove, food and clothes...stored in four bags, called panniers, hanging on either side of both wheels of his bike. He started his journey from State College in the center of Pennsylvania, had ridden through northern Pa, all the way through upstate NY and into the Adirondacks. By the time I met him, he was about 350 miles into his journey and was about half-way done. I had a great interest in his trip because I had also went long distance bicycle camping in my younger days, which was a great and rewarding experience. Except that my trip was a tad longer and started on the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean in New Jersey and ended 46 days and 3,416 miles later at San Francisco Bay in California. So, needless to say, I had a few stories and tips to share with him for his trip. Thanks for stopping by. "The Master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both."
