Days of Summer Past

Posted by Russ Devan (New Hanover, United States) on 21 April 2008 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

I took this image a couple of years ago. It has become one of my personal favorites. It is a scene that I pass everyday on my way to and from work. Even though I see it routinely, it still catches my eye and I find myself looking at this old pond and diving board each time I drive by. Most of the time, I look just because it's such a beautiful and peaceful scene. Sometimes, I slow down and look to see if the mood of the light may have changed it in some subtle way that I could capture it again, but differently. Over the last few years, I've photographed this pond in fog, in brilliant sunshine, with the late afternoon sun warmly illuminating the cattails on the far end, with two feet of snow on the ground, ice covered, at sunrise, and with a thunderstorm quickly moving over it. But this mood is, by far, my favorite. I can only imagine the fun the kids from many years ago had diving into this pond on hot summer days after they were done with their chores. There was a pond, not unlike this one, at the farm next to where I grew up and on which I learned to fish with my childhood friends. We would while away the summer afternoons sitting on the dock, catching sunfish and catfish, tossing them back, and catching them all over again.

I will leave this as the final image in my fog series. I hope you enjoyed them. Thanks for stopping by.
