Clearing Winter Storm

Posted by Russ Devan (New Hanover, United States) on 24 April 2008 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

This is the same scene that I posted yesterday, but taken two winters ago under very different conditions. The weather on New Year's Day, when I took this, was miserable. It had rained and been very dreary all day long. Late in the day, heavy fog started forming just when my boys wanted to go to the pet store to get some supplies for their animals. Remembering that this old farm was very close to the pet store, I brought along the camera hoping to catch this shrouded in fog.

I dropped off the boys at the pet store and told them I'd be gone for just a few minutes to take a few pictures. When I got to this locaton, there was no fog, just the same dreary overcast weather we'd been having all day. But, since I was there, I set up the tripod and the camera anyway, waiting in the soft, ankle-deep mud of the field, hoping the fog might roll in at some point. When I was about ready to give up, the clouds began to part slightly just as the sun was going down and I was rewarded with these beautiful red clouds. The only time the entire day when there was even a slight hole in the cloud cover and I lucked out and managed to be at the right spot at the right time.

After about 45 minutes, my phone rang and it was the boys telling me the store had closed and they were waiting for me outside for me to pick them up. Fortunately, I was literally only a mile away. We all got want we wanted and went home happy on that first day of 2007.

Thanks for stopping by.
