Bee-ing Busy

Posted by Russ Devan (New Hanover, United States) on 26 April 2008 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio.

Thank you for all your kind comments on the last couple of posts. I really appreciate them.

With the warm temperatures we've been having lately, the leaves have been coming out on the trees and the flowers have been blooming left and right. The apple trees at Ringing Hill Orchards, near my home, were bare just last week but are now in full bloom. The hill is literally covered with the sweet smell of apple blossoms.

This was shot Wednesday evening as I walked up the hill between the apple trees of the orchard. Bumble bees were all over the place and some of the bees were busy keeping an eye on me as well as gathering pollen from the blossoms. There were a few instances when I had to swat away a couple of bees that flew too close for comfort when they were checking me out. Fortunately, neither bees nor photographers were injured during the filming of this picture! It took a lot of patience and persistence to get a decent picture of one bee as these little guys are fast! Even then, the bee isn't as sharp as I would like him to bee. So, this image is a bit of a compromise between the patience of the bees, the patience of the photographer, and the fading evening light.

Thanks for stopping by.
