Horse Farm, St. Peters Village

Posted by Russ Devan (New Hanover, United States) on 27 May 2008 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

This is a picturesque horse farm near St. Peters Village in western Chester County. This was photographed on the same evening as, and just prior to, the springhouse image (see prior post on 19 May 2008). This image was made not long after a day-long rainstorm cleared out of the area and left clearing skies full of puffy clouds. For several days last week following the storm, the skies were extremely beautiful and full of big, heavy, puffy clouds.

You can see a slightly better version of this image by clicking on the link to my portfolio below and then selecting "Natural Landscapes" then "Pennsylvania". For some reason if I try to insert the link here directly, it doesn't work correctly. Hey, what do want for nothing?

"The Master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both."

Absolutely beautiful landscape, Russ! The sky is amazing. Very well done. (Checked out the pbase shot, also.)

Another beauty. I had to ask myself if you photoshopped in the sky, but your commentary dispels that notion. ; ) Very nice.

@Wizened Eye: Nope, the clouds were really there, Wiz. My trusty ND grads (just like American Express, I never leave home without them) reduced the brightness of the sky and clouds to within the range that the camera sensor can expose it properly and then I am able to expose for the foreground. This allows me to preserve the detail in the sky so that it doesn't wash out. This is a technique the late Galen Rowell used extensively in his landscapes. The clouds were picking up some great colors from the afterglow of the setting sun as it dropped below the horizon. The highlights and curves adjustments in PS2 enhanced the colors a bit and made the clouds "pop". Many more sky/cloud images will be posted in the next few weeks.

Betsy Barron from Glenmoore, United States

gorgeous.. I like how the fence leads me across and forward - and it sort of mirrors the cloud pattern..

@Betsy Barron: Thanks, Bets. Many times your observations get me to look at my own photos in a different way than when I first looked at them.
