Cloud ReflectionsPosted by Russ Devan (New Hanover, United States) on 21 June 2008 in Abstract & Conceptual and Portfolio. I didn't plan on this image being posted with the previous cloud series since it was photographed about a week later, but it just worked out nicely that way. This was photographed during one of my evening walks a few weeks ago at Green Lane Reservoir. There's a beautiful trail at the end of dead end road that has become one of my favorites for a quiet evening walk. It hugs the shoreline and there are some nice views of the reservoir there. The trail crosses a few small streams that flow over the dark reddish-brown shale bedrock. The fractured bedrock there has a very interesting pattern that has been exposed by the stream (hurray for erosion!) and gives a very interesting, blocky look to the stream as it flows over it (can you tell I'm a geologist as well a photographer?). About a half mile from the trailhead, there is a small bluff that juts out just a few feet above the water and faces due west. It's great to hike to this point at the end of the day and watch the afterglow of the sunset from this point. The clouds turned a beautiful magenta from the sunset that evening and reflected nicely in the still water. As I walked home after I photographed this, a great horned owl kept me company with his soft hoots. "The Master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both."
