Pickeralweed (Pontederia cordata) and Bumblebee

Posted by Russ Devan (New Hanover, United States) on 27 July 2008 in Plant & Nature.

This was photographed at the edge of Sand Pond at Camp NoBeBoSco Boy Scout camp, near Blairstown, NJ. I photographed this without my usual circular polarizer and tripod, as I was out snapping candids of the boys in our troop during their adventures around camp and wasn't carrying that equipment with me at the time. I meant to return later and re-photograph these flowers so that the polarizer could darken the water in the background and saturate the purple in the flowers better. But, I didn't seem to get around to it. I think the bee makes the image anyway. Otherwise, it would be just another flower photo (and how many of THOSE have you seen???).

"The Master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both."

You are right, Russ... the bee makes the photo. But the flowers are pretty and it's a wonderful composition. Makes me think... coming in for a landing!

What I like is the eerie atmosphere created by the pastel colours .... the bee adds a touch of buzzing life to it !

This is really simple - but I really like it. The cumbersome bumblebee approaching the vertical with those leaves crossed below make for an elegant composition.

The picture itself bring me to a place. Very simple, but almost like a freeze frame from a panavision film camera. Nicely done.

sing it brother! The bee is cool and so was NoBeBoSco - does that stand for North Bee Boy Scout?? :)

28 Jul 2008 8:48am

@Betsy Barron: Very close. My understanding is that NoBeBoSco stands for North Bergen Boy Scouts, which may have been the original name, 81 years ago when the camp was founded, of the Boy Scout council that owns the camp. The camp is now owned by the Northern New Jersey Council, BSA.

I love the bee. I imagine him flitting back and forth between the flowers getting his fill of pollen.

The bee is nice, but I think what makes the photo is the composition--all those triangles and diagonal lines. Fabulous images in your photoblog!
