RetreatPosted by Russ Devan (New Hanover, United States) on 31 July 2008 in People & Portrait and Portfolio. Retreat is the ceremony conducted each evening at 5:50 pm sharp when the staff members of Camp NoBeBoSco lower the camp's flag for the day, prior to dinner. As you can see by the looks on their faces, Retreat is a serious and solomn ceremony. Boy Scout camp is full of fun, learning, singing and scout spirit. But, during Retreat, it is a time of seriousness and respect. Even with 300 boys lined up on the A-field during Retreat, you can hear a pin drop it is so quiet. Before this, I was never aware how loud the shutter and mirror slap are on my DSLR as when I shot this. I swear to God, the entire camp could hear my camera going off, which was a bit embarrassing because it seemed to disturb the absolute silence. "The Master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both."

Laurie from New Jersey, United StatesIt is a solemn and moving ceremony which they take very seriously as they should. You captured the seriousness of the moment very well. I've felt the same way about the shutter slap on occasion. 1 Aug 2008 1:05pm |
