Crescent Moon at TwilightPosted by Russ Devan (New Hanover, United States) on 8 August 2008 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio. I very nearly missed this shot because I was forgetful and left to run an errand last Sunday evening without bringing along my camera or tripod. When I drove down my street and saw the crescent moon higher up in the sky, I thought it would look fantastic with the right foreground. But I kept driving as I had a deadline looming and I needed to finish something. When I got about halfway to my destination and had nearly a clear view of the horizon, I thought “deadline be damned!” and made a fast U turn for my equipment. I managed to get back to this spot just in time before the moon dropped below the horizon. Had I remembered to bring my camera from the get go, the moon would have been above those clouds and would have been a more pleasing composition, in my opinion. One interesting item that would have been nice to include with this image was a group of about 8 bicyclists who were out for a night ride. Only minutes after the moon dropped below the horizon and I had packed away my equipment, the cyclists rode past with the lights from their headlamps and bicycles bobbing and meandering down the road right past where I was shooting. The long streaks of light from their collective headlamps (and perhaps some light painting of the riders with a flashlight) would have added an interesting element to the long exposure. "The Master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both."

Betty from New Jersey, United StatesNot having seen the moon higher, I can't compare... but this photo is just excellent! The clouds, the colors, the moon. Well done! 8 Aug 2008 10:28am Judy from Brooksville-Florida,, United StatesI like the moon in the deeper toned area of the sky - well done. 8 Aug 2008 2:53pm Laurie from New Jersey, United StatesI'm glad you made time for this one. It's a very striking photo. I love the crescent and how you can still see the subtle outline of the rest of the moon. I love the beautiful rich tones of the sky. 9 Aug 2008 3:33am |
