Storm Over Ringing Hill

Posted by Russ Devan (New Hanover, United States) on 14 August 2008 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

For a period of about 40 minutes one evening last week, I watched in utter astonshiment as this amazing light slowly developed as a thunderstorm moved in and then cleared out. The sun was peaking through the clouds from the west while the thunderstorm was raging and then began to clear out to the east. Behind the storm were nice, cool temperatures and lower humidity. By the time I got home, a double rainbow greeted me over the orchard just up the road from my home. I could see nearly the entire rainbow. As pretty as it was, I found these storm clouds with only a hint of the remaining rainbows and that amazing light just a bit more interesting. Hopefully, you will, too.

He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both."

FANTASTIC - the lighting is gorgeous and the colors in the clouds, astoundingly beautiful! The rainbow adds a lot also!
The bit of halo effect at the tree line causes me to ask if this has a light HDR effect applied?

@Judy: I didn't notice the halo until you mentioned it. This is not an HDR image but was shot with an NDG filter. Although I used a filter, I still needed to PP the sky separately from the foreground and the halo may be a result of that.

what a fantastic scene - the storm was unreal and produced minute to minute light changes which you captured beautifully here! great leading lines on this wide angle...
