Glowing GloryPosted by Russ Devan (New Hanover, United States) on 30 August 2008 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio. Earlier this summer, my son needed something to do and decided that he wanted to plant some flowers in the yard. He decided that morning glories would look nice growing along the fence that surrounds our swimming pool. So, he went to the store and bought a small packet of seeds, a bunch of those little plastic starter containers and a bag of potting soil. It wasn't long before all the seeds germinated and we had a ton of morning glory seedlings covering the deck. He transplanted them next to all the fence posts in the backyard and added a bunch of compost to give them a healthy start. I added some fertilizer myself a few times over the summer. I'm happy to report that the vines that now cover about half the fence finally bloomed a few weeks ago. I made this photograph early one morning while I was out with our dog in the yard and noticed how the early morning sun nicely backlit the flowers and made them glow. I spot metered on the brightest part of the flower so that the highlights would be preserved and not blown out and to make the rest of the backyard disappear along with the sheds by underexposing them. Nice job with the flowers, Nick. I guess you inherited your grandparents' green thumbs that somehow skipped over me. "The Master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both."

Betty from New Jersey, United StatesThe glow is just fantastic, glad you explained because I was wondering how you managed that. It's just beautiful! Good work... both you and your son! 30 Aug 2008 12:40pm Judy from Brooksville-Florida,, United StatesRus, this is beautiful and I too, enjoyed reading about the technique you uses. 30 Aug 2008 1:43pm Judy from Brooksville-Florida,, United StatesOops ... missed an 's' and couldn't catch it. 30 Aug 2008 1:44pm @Judy: Nick is 18 and is now beyond the age for Boy Scouts, so he can't apply his horticultural efforts toward a merit badge. He has a very strong interest in biology in general, and plants and animals in particular, so his planting all the flowers was just a natural thing for him to do. He is majoring in biology at Penn State. My younger son, who is 13, is the Boy Scout. I expect him to earn his "Star" scout rank next month (then just two more until Eagle). He planted his own things this summer, which will be featured in an upcoming post. Judy from Brooksville-Florida,, United StatesThanks, Russ, for your added info - more power to Nick, and good luck to your Star! 30 Aug 2008 11:20pm Laurie from New Jersey, United StatesThis is really gorgeous! We had morning glories in our first home also along the fence by the pool. They grow so well. The only thing is they can take over everything. I've heard people complain about them completely taking over their yards. I just love them myself. 1 Sep 2008 2:42pm |
