Long and Winding RoadPosted by Russ Devan (New Hanover, United States) on 12 September 2008 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio. This was photographed in New Hanover's Swamp Creek Park following an evening thunderstorm that had cleared out in time for a very nice sunset. After the storm which brought in cooler air, you could see a faint hint of mist rising from the wet pavement of the warm jogging path that follows the perimeter of the park. I attempted to capture a bit of that mist here as I went for an evening stroll, but I wasn't all that successful. Swamp Creek Park has been set up by our township and is used quite frequently by model airplane enthusiasts to fly radio-controlled airplanes. There is a grass landing strip present on one side of the park as well as a wind sock. When my kids were younger, we used to go here to launch model rockets because of its expansive fields, which allowed us to more easily track and find the rockets as they returned to terra firma. I remember one instance when one of our rockets produced a loud BANG after it lifted off and just as it released its chute high in the air (a small explosive charge at the end of the rocket propellent is supposed to separate the nose cone from the rocket body and usually produces a small popping sound, taking the parachute with it and allowing it to unfurl and provide a soft landing for the rocket). We never did see that rocket come down and after much futile searching concluded that it probably blew up at about 500 feet above the ground. It was back to the drawing board after that. "The Master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both."
