Vulture on Barn Roof

Posted by Russ Devan (New Hanover, United States) on 16 October 2008 in Architecture and Portfolio.

Shot at Hoffman Park in Hunterdon County, New Jersey with Betsy, Laurie, and Mark. The color version of this had a strong, saturated blue sky, red rust stains on the roof, and a washed green siding on the barn. It was tough deciding between this and the monochrome image. But, I think the monochrome version emphasizes the repetitive angles in the image, which drew my eye to this scene to begin with.

"The Master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both."

Great composition, as usual! The BW is stunning. Love it.

I can see strength in this image, and do like it immensely. It probably is the better choice. But I also read your description of the actual colors, and now am curious to see them splashed all over that roof and sky, too. I have a similar shot (minus vulture) that I had to choose from (color or BW), and wound up posting them both a couple of weeks apart.

I think you were right to go with the black and white. The vulture might have become lost in it with all the colors. I love those old buildings.

I agree with Laurie, the B&W emphasizes the roof lines! Really nice composition.

That is a cool shot. Perfect for a grayscale image.
