Early WinterPosted by Russ Devan (New Hanover, United States) on 22 November 2008 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio. Southeast Pennsylvania awoke on Friday morning to a rare treat: a gentle snowstorm blanketed the area overnight, leaving us with one to three inches of the fluffy white stuff covering not only the ground, but all of the vegetation and tree limbs for several hours on Friday morning. It began flurrying on and off on Thursday, but nothing accumulated until later that evening when the ground cooled sufficiently to allow the snow to begin accumulating. It's been a long time since I remember getting snow before Thanksgiving. I'm one of those few people in this neck of the woods (at least it feels like I'm in the minority anyway) that actually loves getting snow. It seems to make everything look fresh. Nala, our year-old lab, enjoyed the snow immensely. She didn't seem to remember it from last winter when she was just a little pup. That was probably because it only snowed once here last winter, so she didn't get to experience it very much. She was so excited by the snow, that she literally ran laps around the backyard at full throttle, in what I call her "hyperdrive mode", picking up fallen sticks as she galloped and bringing them to me in an effort to get a game of "fetch" going in the wee hours of the morning. It must be nice to be young and energetic. "The Master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both."
