Four Trees

Posted by Russ Devan (New Hanover, United States) on 4 December 2008 in Landscape & Rural.

This is a scene from northern Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, near the town of Souderton.

The dreamy, blurry effect is not from any photoshop enhancements this time, but was achieved by using a Cokin P840 filter. Typically, I use this filter (and its brother, the P830 filter) when I'm shooting glamour photography to soften the skin of the subject and give the image a dreamlike quality. After initially shooting this scene without a filter, I decided that it needed something, so I quickly slid the P840 into my filter holder and reshot. Back when I was a starving college student, I achieved this same effect by smearing a light coating of petroleum jelly on a UV filter. However, the amount of blur wasn't as consistent across the entire image as using a filter made for this purpose. But, it got the job done and saved me a few bucks.

"The Master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both."

Well done, I like the effect of the filter on the landscape. It looks like a dreamy space.

Looks like a foggy, misty morning with the filter. Beautiful effect.

That is what I seem to get when I use my Conkin Filters even though the only ones I have are ND and Grad NDs...could never figure out why but I've never had much success with them. I used them back in the days of film and never had any problems but when I used them on my D200, the images always looked very soft, even if I manually focused. I have not yet tried them with the D700...perhaps I should try again.
