SolsticePosted by Russ Devan (New Hanover, United States) on 24 December 2008 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio. This was shot on Sunday afternoon on the first official day of winter, otherwise known as the winter solstice. New Hanover and the surrounding areas were encased in several layers of ice, having received sleet and freezing rain for the previous two days. The temperatures stayed below freezing, allowing the ice to stay on the trees and vegetation for a few days (in the higher elevations, that is). After days of freezing rain, the sun finally came out and transformed everything into shimmering glass as it shone through the ice-covered landscape. While I was out shooting, I received several calls from friends telling me that I needed to be at this location and that location with my camera with the sun shining through the ice. It's nice to know that friends are thinking of me when they see a gorgeous landscape. It's Christmas Eve, so for all of you that celebrate it, may you have a joyous and wonderful Christmas tomorrow. "The Master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both."
