Beneath Orion's Belt

...Boy Scout Troop 367 camping out under the stars in French Creek state park this past weekend.

Although, it got down into the teens at night, the weather was absolutely phenomenal for the first weekend of spring. The crystal clear skies made for some very chilly sleeping inside the tents. We had several new scouts join the troop this weekend for their first camping trip as boy scouts. They got to learn new scouting skills this weekend such as fire building, how to light a stove, knife and axe sharpening, how to use a saw, working with a compass, and cooking their meals outdoors. In the evening, they got to perform skits next to the campfire for the rest of the troop to watch. Some of the older scouts even cooked their dinners over the campfire. As for the adult leaders, we were content with a dinner of chicken and dumplings cooked on the camp stove.

"The Master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both."

In the teens, huh? Makes my bed feel a bit more comfy. It does sound like fun and brings back some memories of camping. Back in 2003 I made a 3 week long 4200 mile camping tour on my motorcycle along the West Coast. What a wonderful time. Oh, a good shot of the camp.

Russ- Better you then me. My bed was nice and warm this weekend! Would prefer to see more star trails to tell the story in the photo but nicely handled exposure on your "scout city".

@Dan Creighton: I like to rough it now and then so I don't turn soft in my old age. I've always liked photos showing the stars as points of light so you can see the constellations. That's tough to do with a time exposure. Even with an exposure of only 60 secs, when I zoom in, I can see very small star trails. I noticed this when I color corrected the shot for the lanterns, the stars turned bright blue. So I had to go and turn each of them white individually. I couldn't figure out a more time efficient way to do this and not have the color temperatures for the various light sources all squirrely. I did shoot an 8 minute exposure to get nice star trails, but the light from the lanterns washed out the scene in camp, even with all but one of them turned off.

What a capture of this constellation, and what a really creatively interesting way to present it!
