Hail of a Storm

Posted by Russ Devan (New Hanover, United States) on 27 June 2009 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

This is the trailing edge of a nasty thunderstorm as it moved away from New Hanover on Friday evening. In addition to a ton of rain, small stream flooding and downed trees, it brought a LOT of hail about the size of large marbles and damaged many of the vegetables in my garden and broke a security light on the side of my house. Fortunately for me, that's all it did. It literally looked like it had snowed in June. Right after the storm passed, I grabbed the camera because I KNEW there would be great light to be had somewhere! This was shot just as the sun was dropping below the horizon. No adjustments were made to the saturation of the image.

"The Master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both."

Beautiful Russ. I like the clouds in context with the home. We didn't see that kind of color here in town but did have some awesome clouds. Too bad I was stuck dealing with the aftermath of downed wires and arcing electricity!

Love the colors! Wished I lived further away from the city sometimes...the colors in the sunset here last night weren't nearly as dramatic. Nicely done!

We got some of that wild storm. We had hail a bit smaller than marbles. It was pretty wild and the sky became the eeriest of colors. Photos from my house would have been a waste with all the houses and powerlines. Some day I will be in the right place to get some cool shots after a storm like that.

This is a really cool shot. Those colors are amazing and I think those are some mammatus clouds. Not as distinct as some I've seen but pretty awesome just the same.
