Nocturnal Chorus

Posted by Russ Devan (New Hanover, United States) on 3 July 2009 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

I took a few days off this past week and took my kids camping in the Adirondack Mountains in northern New York, about a 6-1/2 hour drive north of New Hanover. This was the night view from our camp site on the shore of Seventh Lake. The view of the moon setting over the lake was only part of the magical appeal of the lake at night. As I sat on the shore of the lake taking in the quiet view, I was treated to a beautiful chorus of bull frogs croaking in the water in front of me. Nearby, two great horned owls, one on shore to the left and a second on the island in this photo, called to each other with soft, calming hoots. In the distance, a loon called to its mate with a series of soft wails. Except for this wonderful night chorus, it was completely and totally dead quiet. It was wilderness heaven.

"The Master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both."
